How often should you update your website?

Q1. When did you last visit your own website? Yesterday, last week, last month; or has it been so long you can’t even remember?

Q2. When did you last change something in your business? When did you take on a new product, change one of your services, or something major happened in your sector?

If the answers to those two questions are different, then your website isn’t reflecting your business or working for you.

The answer to, “How often should you update your website?” is, whenever anything changes in your business or sector.

It is easy to forget about your website, I know, I have done it myself. I’ve spoken to lots of people who say things like, “Oh, don’t go off the information on our website, that’s way out of date,” or, “The new products have changed so we need to update the pictures on the site.” Yes, you’ve heard it too, it happens all the time.

Can you update your site yourself, or do you need to get a web developer to do it for you?

Maybe for your business it doesn’t really matter, leaving your content exactly as it was six months ago doesn’t have any impact? I bet it does.

Do you have any idea how many people are looking at your website on a daily or weekly basis? Does your site do anything for your business?

If you don’t know what your website is doing for your business, I suggest you need to dig deeper and find out more.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • How many people are visiting my site?
  • Where are they coming from?
  • What are they doing on the site when they get there?
  • What pages are they finding useful?
  • Where do they go before leaving the site?
  • How is all this helping my business?

The answers to these questions and many more are available to you now if you know where to look.

The main point is this. If you don’t know what your website is doing for your business and don’t regularly check and update the content, why do you have a website, and what opportunities are you missing? What money are you leaving on the table?

Your website is YOU, it’s your business and it sits there on the internet seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day telling your story and acting as your sales department. Is it telling the truth or misrepresenting you? Is it putting your business in its best light?

I can do an audit on your site and compare how your site is performing against the site of your main competition.
