What is copywriting?

Well, it isn’t proofreading, or sorting out copyright issues for creatives; two things people think I do when I say “I’m a copywriter.” 

So, what is copywriting?

Copywriting is promotional, persuasive, or sales writing. Good copywriting converts and sells, right off the page.

Think of advertisements, think of a website home page, a landing page, a leaflet, a brochure. Think of product descriptions, of blog posts. These are all examples of different types of copywriting.

Many people try to write their own copy, they think paying for a professional copywriter is an unnecessary expense. That’s not true.

With three, yes three seconds, your words have to penetrate someone’s brain before they move on, you have to get hold of that person and say STOP! 

The words you use need to be great words. They have to connect with that person and help them with what they’re looking for.

Look, this is a noisy, noisy world. Words, pictures, CONTENT, is coming at us from all directions, all the time. You don’t have much chance to get it right.

How many times have you heard someone say, “We have a website, but we don’t get much work from it!” To be successful, a website needs a strategy, together with words that convert.

Good copywriting makes things happen. It makes sure that all that investment you made in your website is actually going to do the business and make a return for you.

Now, if anyone asks you “What is copywriting?” You can explain that it’s the really important part of their website, the part that actually does the selling.
